American Airlines Million Mile Kit

Wohoo, I received my American Airlines Million Miles Kit today in the mail. I was actually shocked at what was inside. Besides the card, and luggage tags which say "1 million" I also received four system wide one way upgrades good for travel on any AA metal anywhere in the world (subject to availability). These certificates, known as VIP upgrades, are reserved for folks who achieve Executive Platinum each year (100,000 miles in an airline seat) or folks who achieve 2 million Miles (lifetime platinum). In addition to those system wide upgrades I also received 8 electronic upgrade certificates (each good for 500 miles) which were deposited in my account. All the folklore out there suggests that I was not supposed to get 4 system wide upgrades (previous 1 million milers did not). I just called and confirmed that I did in fact get 4 upgrades in my account.

Pretty cool. As long as the AA freq flyer program sticks around this is a pretty valuable perk. Not to mention the 4 VIP upgrades will get me and my wife to Europe this summer on business class (12 hour flight) w/o me having to use miles to upgrade (100,000 miles + $1000 dollar fee). Sweet.

So, here is what I get:

  • Lifetime Gold status for the life of the Gold program
  • 4 systemwide one way upgrades on AA metal
  • 8 electronic upgrades, each good for 500 miles of domestic travel
  • new luggage tags with my name
  • new card

Below is the info they sent me. Thanks AA!

No one got the SuperUgrades. She just hasn't gotten the letter telling her that this was a mis-print. I made million-miles recently and got the same materials. I also got the letter saying this is a mistake. Bah!
They are just normal 500 mile upgrade points. Unfortunately, this a major difference! These normal upgrades are almost unusable these days... I put in requests for upgrades *every week* and I still have over 20 that I haven't been able to use.

So the real benefit of a million miles is the little logo on the card... that is about it.

There is also the hidden benefit. At a million miles you are supposedly "lifetime gold". This means that even if you don't qualify, you will never loose your status completely. This is nice, and my father-in-law is actually lifetime platinum (2 million miles) so I know it is true. But since it isn't actually written down in any of their communications, I just worry that it could just as easily disappear.

Does lifetime Gold status mean that you only need to travel 25,000 miles to qualify for Platinum each year?

I just got my email and googled it to see what was in the kit. When I get home from my travels, I'll have to take a look and see what is in the kit. I have a friend who is a 3MM miler and he basically gets the red carpet rolled out for him any time he travels American. He's in the Admirals club, gets free upgrades, etc. I'll probably be too old to travel by the time I make it.

Well, 800,000 or so miles to get to 2 million for me. Getting Platinum would be nice cause a lot of the security lines these days are only Plat and up (Gold excluded).

don't know if anyone is reading this... but at 1MM you can get EVIP upgrades... just change your address in your account to an overseas address. (look up a business or something in japan). once you hit the 1MM you will get 4 EVIP **i just did it** .... you may not get the warm welcome kit and luggage tags but who cares, you get 4 EVIPs. and after a few weeks, (make sure the upgrades are in your account) change the address back to your normal one. it's easy and they figure a person living outside the US isn't going to use the 8 domestic things so they give you EVIP. i've been executive platinum with AA for 2 years now, and i find just about every way to get more EVIPs... ive already used up the 8 they give for this year so it was nice to get 4 more.

if JUN truly changed his address to a fake overseas just to get the EVIPs, what an ass. there's something about looking yourself in the mirror. integrity is all we have. if he/she would do that, what would they do when real business is on the line? i hope i never sit next to JUN on a plane or have business together.
