Back to Carbonite

Finally got an email from Mozy support, but it was too late to fix my problem and as such I've given up on waiting 2 weeks for my data to be uploaded again.

Also, the Carbonite CEO left a comment in my Mozy post. I like that, it shows me that their company is alive. Whenever I post about Wesabe the folks there are always on top of things answering customer questions and concerns in my comments section.

Anyway, David Friend let me know about a recent upgrade Carbonite made that now makes it competitive with Mozy. They now have:

  • Support for your own private key (yay!)
  • 3 months of file change history (yay!)
  • Scheduling of backups

These are all features that Mozy had a leg up on.

Also, they have revamped the Carbonite UX to be much easier to use and nice to look at.

I'm back using Carbonite and I feel better about it already.

Interesting. I just had a support question for Mozy that they replied to within 24 hours. It was followed by an email conversation that included two follow up replies. Both were responded to within the day: one immediately.

Regarding Carbonite, it is refreshing seeing a company pro-actively communicating. I remember being astonished a couple years ago by Peter Blum (http://peterblum.com/) at how prompt support requests were as well as how proactive he was in responding to comments in the blogosphere on his VAM controls.* It'll be interesting to see how your experience with Carbonite goes.

*No affiliation. Just a happy user.

I've been using Mozy since dropping Carbonite in December 2007. For most of the year, it worked fine, though towards the end of the year, there was an application update that did a couple of things - forced the Carbonite icon to stay on my desktop (even coming back after a delete and reboot), and more annoyingly, caused my hard drive activity to increase to a point where my machine was unusable with Carbonite enabled - forcing me to leave it disabled most of the time. Support wasn't much help, so when my subscription expired, I didn't renew and moved on.

It would be good to hear your experiences with the updated version of Carbonite. I'm thinking about giving it another shot, though iDrive also looks promising and looks like it has a lot of the same functionality.
