Bluetooth on XP

Like Andy & Trevin, I feel that bluetooth on Windows is a complete and utter disaster, or as Trevin says "Bluetooth is the devil". I feel sorry for our users.

When you buy a PC with “bluetooth support” one of two things will happen:

  1. You will get the Microsoft Bluetooth Stack
  2. You will get the WIDCOMM/Toshiba Bluetooth Stack

If you get #1 you are sort of lucky. It stays out of your way, and does not have a million running processes, desktop icons and other garbage. However, you will not be able to pair it with a Bluetooth Headset for use with Skype or Office Communicator. You will be able to use a bluetooth mouse, dial-up connection and other stuff. Because the Microsoft bluetooth stack lacks some “core” features, a bunch of our OEMs have decided that they can do a better job writing software than we can (and they have failed). Hardware companies should NOT be allowed to make software. Companies that are in commodity businesses should not be allowed either. They just DON’T CARE about usability and they DON’T RESPECT YOUR PC.

If you get #2 you PC will be infected by unsigned drivers (with software to fake click them anyway), shortcuts everywhere (that you cannot remove), 40 (yes 40) prefab COM ports for your use, 3 always running processes for Bluetooth AV support, Hands Free, LAN profiles, tray icons, and something else. The UI for pairing is utterly confusing, and the options dialog has incomprehensible settings with 3 rows of tabs. You will be able to pair it with a bluetooth headset but will find it impossible to use with ActiveSync, a mouse, or exchange files over bluetooth. However, you’ll be able to exchange business cards (yipee, who needs that) and a million other things in an attempt to support every single bluetooth profile on the planet.

Why is it that software vendors feel the need to put crap all over the machine in an effort to remind you who they are and that they are valuable. Why don’t they spend their R&D getting their drivers signed and WHQL certified rather than instructing you on how to click “Install Anyway”. Anti Virus Software is like this, placing shortcuts, explorer shell add-ins, outlook toolbar etc all over the place…

It’s times like these where I long for the days of using a Mac where Apple has NAILED the bluetooth experience (like 2 years ago).

You know, you can always go back to those days! Mac OS X has continued to advance, too. I bought myself an unlocked mobile phone last year (Sony-Ericsson K700i) and it Just Worked via Bluetooth with Tiger and my PowerBook. Even the "presenter remote" feature of my phone works - and the keys do all the right things in Keynote! It's really cool.

Until I read your post, I honestly had no idea the Windows XP experience with Bluetooth was so horrible.

It really is a pretty bad experience, I have to admit.

The USB Bluetooth dongle that I got for my laptop came with the WIDCOMM stack (unfortunately) and even though I somehow managed to get it to pair up and work properly with my Nokia cell, I had to jump through a number of hoops before it would let me do anything. And as you mentioned, there's junk all over the machine, so I don't let the software get anywhere close to my production desktop.

I don't actually use Bluetooth much anymore, but any idea if the experience is going to get any better in Vista? I would hope so.

Omar, come on! What the hell are you doing ragging on the OEM's software? THEY'RE TRYING TO FIX SCREW UPS AT MICROSOFT! Using my Bluetooth mouse is a bit like trying to get blood out a stone - damn near impossible! When it works- woo hoo - it works! But gosh - when Microsoft doesn't like Bluetooth, or doesn't wanna work, or its having a hissy fit - whatever- say good bye to using the expensive mouse you bought from Microsoft. Forget it.

I seriously hope this gets fixed up in Vista. Microsoft rarely respects my PC (see viruses, worms, trojans, etc) and to tell someone off for writing bad software is just... sick.

All the best mind! Great blog :)

My USB Bluetooth dongle came with the Widcomm stack too. I installed it first time and was frustrated at the mess that it creates. Since then i have been using the less functional Microsoft stack, though it gets my job done.

Been using Tiger on my powerbook for the first time ever this past month. It seems to work pretty good with very little errors, yet for some reason say I try to pair with someone who then leaves (in a hurry say). It leaves them on my Devices list for around 3weeks (so far anyway) with no clear way of removing them as they are not actually part of my favourites category. I only ever use my xp machine for transfering data from my mobile to the computer for storage purposes yet it was a pain to set up. This is due again to driver issues and just as you said Omar they don't pay there fee's to register the drivers and end up in a state, see here: http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:Msxeb7YyxRMJ:www.belkin.com/support/download/downloaddetails.asp%3Ffile_id%3D1900+belkin+bluetooth+xp&hl=en
(not too sure BB code works on these blogs). All in all the Mac is very good at bluetooth communication yet it still has problems and will probably continue to have them as new innovations come out. Windows handles it pretty well considering they support hundreds of devices where as the Mac (without testing) only supports its internal device with such quality.

I had similar experience where MS bluetooth stack was so much easier to use compared to the Toshiba one. I whined about this on my blog back in september..

It was like nirvana once I ditched the toshiba stack and opted for the MS stack.

So it's not just me? Whew.

I quit using Bluetooth a LONG time ago because of these issues. It really sucked because I spent $70 on a bluetooth modem and $60 or so on a bluetooth dongle and ended up not using either one.
