C|Net Article on Windows Live Mail

C|Net has a great feature on Windows Live Mail. A few weeks ago Ina Fried came to campus and interviewed a number of folks as well as sat in on some meetings. I wasn’t on campus that day which is a bit of a bummer (was at ETech) but I see that I made it into the article anyway :-).

Ina hints at some of the changes we’re making to the service very shortly, something I discussed with Scoble yesterday when he was down filming our team for Channel 9.

We’re getting ready to push our next version to the site, and I can’t wait.

Hopefully it's the one without the right ad that I saw for a day (and now I've got the right ad back :( )

How's the laptop working out?

As a beta tester, I love the new mail interface. I have one question, though. I have my main email account through a university, but I'll be graduating in a month and will have to migrate to a new address. I'd rather move to a live.com address than hotmail.com....any idea when the the new domain will be avaliable?

Thanks!

It seems that a lot of people (myself included) would rather have the choice of which ad to remove. Since I don't use the preview pane when it's on the right (the column one) the skyscraper ad isn't near as much of a bother as the top ad. We think that if you have the reading pane turned off or where it's at the bottom (so it looks like traditional outlook) then the ad at the top should be removed since the skyscraper ad on the side doesn't hinder as much. When however you have the preview pane on the side, then remove the skyscraper ad and instead use the top ad since in this case you need the screen real estate there. It is nice to know though that some action is being taken.

When I first saw live mail I was stunned by how intrusive the ads were. There is nothing like them on Yahoo Mail or Gmail.

That said: If they were a bit smaller I could deal with them. (Besides there are ad-blocker programs to remove them entirely.) BUT: If MS implements a paid-for tagline (or ANY mandatory tagline) that's just tacky and I think that would drive more people to competing services. (Just my thoughts.)

Otherwise: For being just out of the gate, not a bad job. I would absolutely like Firefox support. (I rarely ever use IE because if it gets "damaged" I have to reinstall the entire OS to fix it.)
