Hotmail now supports the i’m Initiative

image I’m pretty excited that a feature my team worked on recently just launched. Hotmail now supports the i’m Initiative that was previously limited to Windows Live Messenger.

You can read all the details on the Hotmail blog.

What is the i’m Initiative?

The i’m Initiative is a Microsoft program where Microsoft shares a portion of their advertising revenue for everyday activities – sending IMs and emails. Hotmail and Messenger have ads, like all free web services, and Microsoft makes money when a customer sees an ad. The i’m Initiative has successfully raised over 1.4 million dollars since it got started in 2007. It used to be available only in Windows Live Messenger, and now the Hotmail team is glad to say that you’ll be able to raise money for the cause of your choice each time you send an email.

How do I get started?

Go to http://im.live.com to join. You can choose to participate in Messenger, Hotmail, or both and you can pick a different organization for each service or dedicate all your efforts to one cause – it’s entirely up to you! This program is currently available only to customers in the United States. Once you’re set up, you’ll raise money for your favorite cause every time you send an email or IM. It’s really easy. Once you join, there’s no extra time out of your day, you don’t have to pay any money, and you get to know that you’re taking a step towards making the world better. The power of the collective can be huge – think of the difference that could happen if everyone swapped out a few plastic grocery bags each week for a reusable bag or took one less car trip a week.

If you are a Hotmail user I hope that you sign up.

PS – once nice side affect of joining the i’m initiative is that if you are a free user, we no longer append the little tag-line at the bottom of your email. Instead we place a small graphic and text letting folks know you are participating in the i’m initiative.

Here is how the graphic appears:

Hotmail on your Windows Mobile Phone

For the past several years it has not been possible to get your Windows Live Hotmail, and Contacts on your Windows Mobile 5/6 Phone.... unless of course you were a Microsoft Employee in which case you just downloaded the bits and installed them (or you are a TMobile subscriber).

My wife, sister and father all have Windows Mobile phones, so I have been waiting for the day I could get them all set up.

Well, as of today, this problem has been fixed. Kudos to the folks on the Mobile team that made this happen.

The download has support for:

  • Hotmail "push" access (your mail is "pushed" to your phone, you don't have to go get it)
  • Windows Live Contacts synchronization
  • Live Search bar for the home screen
  • One-click photo upload to Windows Live Spaces

You also get access to all your folders in your Hotmail account.

Windows Live Events

image I am SOO excited that Windows Live Events has launched. My favorite thing about my job is that Mike Torres and I were talking about this service only last year, and we couldn't wait till it shipped... Evite has set such a low bar for this kind of thing that we knew that we could do a better job, and IMHO, the v1 of this service is just that. I expect WLE will only get better.

Also, WLE shipped in the nick of time. I just set up an Event Space for our daughter Sarah's One Year birthday (previewed on the right). I'm already in love with the site. I've got:

  • Event Details
  • Email Notifications to guests
  • The ability to make my wife an "organizer" giving her full control of the space
  • The Highlights from the past year in photos
  • Some Videos I have hosted on soapbox
  • A map to our house with event details.
  • A custom URL for my event.
  • Attendee list
  • No Windows Live ID required to respond to an invite
  • The ability for our guests to upload the photos they have taken after the party.

Big Congrats to the folks who got this service out the door!

Windows Live Suite Installer

Like Dare, I didn't really see the value in this thing when I first heard about it.... not even later when I first tried it, but I have to admit, it's a nice installer.

I was curious how the installer talks to the web page about what to install and Long Zheng documents the magic. Pretty clever.

I'm loving the new Windows Live Photo Gallery (that my fam can now run on XP and Vista) allowing me to put Digital Image Suite out to pasture... since it never did anything correct with meta data and Gallery supports XMP and the like. It also means my Mom can finally ditch the MSN Client in favor of Windows Live Mail with PhotoMail (the killer feature IMHO).

Simplification of my life is a good thing, even if it's mainly simplification of my family IT support workload.

Running YSlow against Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo and AOL

For fun I ran YSlow to find out how it rated Windows Live Hotmail's Performance according to Yahoo's rules.

Service Performance Grade
Windows Live Hotmail (Full) A (98)
Gmail A (99)
Yahoo Mail Beta A (90)
AOL Mail B (80)

The reason Hotmail got a 98 and not a higher score? We use ETags... correctly. Yahoo should update that rule since we use IIS and you can in fact sync your ETags across your servers.

Update: turns out that YSlow doesn't work well with Frames, hence the numbers above are actually not accurate (at least not for The Full version of Hotmail). Not sure if this is something that will be fixed in YSlow.

Here are the numbers using the "classic versions" of each site. By classic I mean traditional Web 1.0 HTML.

Service Performance Grade
Windows Live Hotmail (Classic) C (75)
Gmail (Light) A (93)
Yahoo Mail Classic A (93)
AOL Mail n/a

If we didn't get an F on the ETags I wonder what our real score would be.
