Two reason not to use Google

There are a few things I still use Google for.

  1. Stock Quotes inline for search results
  2. Mobile Local/Maps
  3. Spell Checking in the Google Toolbar
  4. Usenet search (if you write code you need this)
  5. Movie Time Search

#1 and #2 no longer a reason thanks to MSN Search. However, MSN Mobile folks, I have yet to figure out how to get to the Local link. Where is beta services?

Google, listen up. Your services aren't "sticky" yet. I can and will go to the better product anytime I like. Right now, the MSN Search guys are shipping new bits faster than you. Like the MSN Weather Plugin (rockin), MSN Screen Saver, and Desktop Search.

Even though I still use the Google toolbar, I never use the built-in spell checker. Instead, I use ieSpell (http://www.iespell.com/), which has a several more options. Since I use wikis and wiki-style formatting on my blog, I especially like ieSpell's ability to ignore MixedCase words.

I read your blog quite frequently, but you're kinda crazy with this post. Everything that MS is coming out with is just a copy of somebody else. I love when they released their new and improved MSN Search, and the design was a straight ripoff of Yahoo! Not to mention all the things that they have copied Google on! I love MS products, but I'm waiting for them to decide to be innovators instead of followers. Even IE7 is a ripoff of firefox with the search box in the upper right hand corner! Also, tell the IE7 guys to fix the tabs, having the tabs above the file menu is extremely annoying.

Davy, that's not really fair to say that what we do is a copy of someone else. If that were true then everyone would be copying everyone. Google wasn't the first to do Search, but they did it the best. Tabs are not an innovation. I'm sorry, but they are used all over the OS.

Definitely agree regarding Usenet search. It is the only thing that is holding me back on switching to MSN Search. I tried to switch and really appreciated the search results, but as a dev, I need Google Groups since I absolutely rely on it.
