Disable the Adobe Updater

For the past 3 days, Adobe has insisted on creating a folder called Updater5 in My Documents folder. No attempts to stop it have worked (any time you re-install or update it just comes back).

I can't stand this!

Why bother you ask? Well Acrobat Reader 8 sucks much less than previous versions, and I've found some compatibility problems with FoxIt Reader that have brought me back to Acrobat Reader.

I'm also looking at purchasing Acrobat Standard so that I can digitize my scans as PDF files using Optical Character Recognition (I previously used Microsoft Document Imaging, part of Office, but the version in Office 2007 ships with an IFilter that does not seem to work with Windows Desktop Search 3 and Vista, meaning all my current scanned TIFF and MDI files with embedded OCR are are useful as static image files). PDF files are indexed fine though. Go figure.

update: The registry key does not seen to work. Aaron Parker has an excellent post on how to create you own customized installer that will never do anything bad.

Last night at about 7pm my computer started getting really sluggish, as I was using a new app I blamed that. After a while I closed the app, computer still really sluggish. I then check in task manager I found Adobe Updater working in the background using 90%+. It must have been doing that for at least an hour. I hadn't asked it to hadnt recently used any Adobe products but there it is doing a routine update, second in a month using all MY resources without telling or asking me. Try to close it, cant theres no button, icon to close it, end process in task manager doesnt work. Try opening Adobe programs to change update options cant find any update options. Computer is so slow its unreal eventually change the programs priority to low. Still using 60-95% of the processor. Have to leave the computer. This morning go to use the computer its still running!!!!!
15+ hours at full processor capability to run an automatic update program?????? What the hell is it doing????? I could easily defrag a hard drive in that time. Now I could say that Adobe own Macromedia who are one of the biggest DRM firms in the world. Are they using this program to check my hard drive for pirate material? What are they doing?

Just open Adobe Reader, and manually look look for updates (under the help menu).
Now, it will look for updates and when it finishes it will show a "Preferences" button that you can use to turn on automatic updates.

YES!!!! Thank you so much. Ugh. I hated (yes - it's a strong word) Updater5. Looked so messy. I looked everywhere for how to disable updates but I couldn't find it. Anyways, once again, thank you for the solution.

Alternatively if you still want the updates but want to decide when it runs disallow the internet connection on your firewall. This will kill the process. If you want to use the updater manually remove the firewall block and run AdobeUpdaterInstallMgr.exe from the updater5 folder. Check the download on idle box.

The problems with Acrobat go far beyond mere annoyances with the product itself--they extend to all Adobe products once you have installed a recent version of Acrobat Reader. What happens is that all Adobe products on your PC are now empowered to "call home". I don't know what they communicate, but both PhotoShop and FrameMaker on my PC started doing this after I installed Acrobat Reader V7 (I think it started with V7.0, but it may have been a minor update of V7).

I actually first noticed the problem at work, when they updated Reader. Whenever I opened FrameMaker, I would get a dialog that said, "Adobe online internal error". An "internal error" is usually something very bad, but FM would start normally after I clicked this dialog. After some investigation, I found out that this dialog resulted from corporate IT having blocked FM from "calling home".

At home, I noticed that both FrameMaker V7.1 and Photoshop were attempting to contact Adobe.com, because Zone Alarm gave me a notification. This had never happened before I updated Acrobat. I blocked both applications from "calling home" via ZA, but then got an annoying "contacting Adobe" progress bar. I then deleted the folder "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Web", figuring that this was the culprit. That helped...I now only get the single "Internal Error" dialog with FM that I get at work. PhotoShop is completely back to normal.

I uninstalled Acrobat and am trying Foxit. Even if I have trouble reading PDF docs at home, I am never going to install Acrobat reader again. Adobe obviously has delusions of indispensability.

Hello, I have had this same problem with Adobe updater also. I searched and found 6 files with updater5 and none had an exact folder-C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater5. The 5 files ranged from empty to 2.5+MB. I'm on dial-up so if I mess up it would take forever to get back. Could someone give me a safe folder to remove and the characters (addr.) to put in the firewall block to stop this problem? Thank You, Dan

search for a file called AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat
open in wordpad
enter the following line between the others

<AutoCheck>0</AutoCheck>

save it, and it should stop doing things by itself
without your permission

Adobe Reader sux!... but sometimes we need it because of
file incompatibilties

Adobe apparently doesn't realize how worthless said "home phoning" capabilities are to people with a router/switch or a driver based firewall application. Many think they're already overstepping their boundaries legally by installing bullshit like this in the first place. As far as eating all of your resources without any sort of warning, that's just bad business. They think they can get away with it because of the renowned their software has. Many of their "creative suite" apps have that same damned generic gray-panel crap. Oops gtg, end rant.

I didnt have this problem until I replaced IE6 with Firefox 2 weeks ago. Since then every time I use Adobe Reader, Updater runs the CPU at 100%, the CPU ran very hot and everything slowed down to a crawl. Your fix worked, Thank you.

Go to Program files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater5 folder. Under that there is a file AdobeUpdater.exe. Double-click it; It will search for all updates; Never mind, let it search... On next screen it will show available updates; Along with that, you'll see Preferences. Just go there and disable auto updates! Voila...Cheers! Enjoy!

Thank you! I just installed CS3 Master Collection and I started getting an "Updater" folder in My Docs. It was really pissing me off. So everyone knows, this tip also works for that folder if you delete the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater" folder.

I did the <AutoCheck>0</AutoCheck> mod mentioned by Newk about a month ago. I just got the following message:

"Adobe Updater has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

You can just rename...

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater5
to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\BKUPUpdater5

Then you can keep the Updater, without it auto-starting!

May help some low-bandwidth users ;)

In Adobe Acrobat reader 8, the preferences to disable the updater, DOES NOT WORK. Try removing the Update 5 folder as some have stated here, it worked for me! The problem with disabling the update from preferences is, under preferences in 8, there is no option to disable the update there.

I don't give a frik about Adobe and rip them off every chance I get!!!

Always hated that auto updater. Unloading the updater folder stops all the other adobe progs from looking for updates too which is 100% fine with me.

Any corporation that makes it difficult for the average user to find and disable features doesn't deserve my respect or my money!

They do produce excellent programs but very rarely consider the average users out there. Eat my shorts Adobe!

Every and any time you install an Adobe program it also installs spyware called bonjour, this sends information to them on the quiet. Do a google search and find the disabler for the bonjour crap. F### you Adobe and your spyware!

There's a much easier way to do this. You don't have to edit any files. And It keeps the updater in case you want to, for whatever reason, turn it back on.

Go here: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater5"

Look for "AdobeUpdaterInstallMgr". It's an application file. Run it and it will begin checking for updates. Don't click "Cancel". Let it finish checking then you will see the small "Adobe Updater" window pop-up. Click "Preferences". Uncheck "Automatically check for Adobe updates:". Click "Okay". Click "Cancel" to stop it from checking for updates again. Then you're done!

I keep disabling the updater (acrobat reader 8) in the preferences but every day it is somehow set back to check for updates. Is anyone else having this problem? It could be that it is not saving my preferences properly.

Just disable Adobe Updater, like this:

using Group Policy (run gpedit.msc on command prompt) on the domain/machine. Disallow the execution of "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater5\AdobeUpdater.exe" in "User Configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Software Restrictions/Additional Rules" by creating a new Path Rule.
