Creative Zen Micro Out of Box Experience

I just received my Creative Zen Micro. I am preparing to put together a Zen Micro vs iPod review as I have done for the Rio Carbon and the iRiver H320. For those of you that don't know, I have been evaluating various devices in the pursuit to find something as good as or better than my iPod. I outline this quest in my post on iPod Replacement Criteria. For the past few months I have been fairly happy with my Rio Carbon, however I found the Zen to be appealing because it has an FM Radio and a better User Interface, as well as a removable battery. Recently Creative released MTP firmware, which gives it PlaysForSure audio support. They are currently working on firmware that will give it Subscription support for NapsterToGo and have a beta firmware release.

So far my Out of Box experience was phenomenal when compared to the Rio Carbon. Furthermore, I found that it was almost as good as the iPod. Creative is really paying attention as the Zen Micro comes with a white usb cable, a white charger, a sleeve, white headphones and a stand that doubles as a belt clip. Very slick packaging and it made me very happy when opening my new toy. You can see some of the Out of Box pictures below (more pics).

OMG, that Zen is really ugly as hell. Just when I thought those "iPod contenders / killers..." blabla couldn't get any less appealing, you had to publish those photos. In fact this thing is _so_ ugly that I think Apple should use one of those in a TV commercial and just say "now look at our 'competition'". And worst of all, it lacks a scroll wheel.

You have to drink gallons of MS Koolaid to replace an iPod with _that_

Does the Creative Zen Micro offer a way to "Star Rate" tracks? If yes, do these ratings synchronize back to the PC by using WMP10?

Sadly I do not think you can rate.

How can you think that thing is ugly. It is probably one of the best looking DAPs ive ever seen, and i LOVE mine. I wouldnt trade it for anything. And it has a scroll pad there in the middle of the player.

I'm incredibly curious to see this review as well.

Also, thanks for doing this whole iPod replacement/comparison thing in the first place. The hype around the iPod demands it, and as a potential DAP owner, I greatly appreciate it!

Do not buy the Creative Zen Micro!!!

I bought one unit and was amazed with its size, technical specs, etc.
however, when I started to use it, I realized that the battery got uncharged without using the device. For example, I used to go to work with the mp3 using it for 30 min. After 8 hours working when I went out the MP3 was completely uncharged and had no power even to show characters in the display.

I went to the mall where i bought it and the gave me a NEW UNIT, and guess what... happened exactly the same. Surfing the internet, i realized that this problem concerns to many more users. The Creative web site do not reply the messages that you drop there and the only thing that you can do is to update de firmware. I UPDATED THE FIRMWARE to the latest release, but the problem still persists.

Finally, I went again to the mall and fortunately they refunded me the money. Now i will invest this money in an Ipod :-)

Creative knows that the Zen Micro has a dramatic desing error in its electronics, but they prefered to release it to the market anyway. I just don't want other users to suffer the same problems.

Hey yo,

I had your problem as well - BUT I FIGURED OUT WHY! Its a bug in the firmware because of when you charge the Creative Zen Micro in a power outlet with ANOTHER large plug inside it. The key is to go to Creative's Website, WHICH HAS SUPPORT, UNLIKE MACINTOSH, and download the Firmware upgrade,w hich is easy and simple. Problem solved.

Yeah, Zen Micro is quite cute and stuff. I've had it a week, it worked perfectly until yesterday. It suddenly died (in the middle of a song). It had the awful "firmware problem". I download the firmware 2 point something...the player it self is working perfectly right now, but it can't syncronize with my PC. So I'm trying to fix this..or maybe I'll just return the damn thing.
