Dear Comcast

I have been using your new fangled High Definition PVR with two tuners for a few months now. Let me tell you, this is the buggiest piece of consumer electronics I have ever used (note: this is the version with the TV Guide Software, not the Microsoft Foundation). I can't believe that you are making me pay to use this device as it does not function most of the time. Here is a list of my complaints:

  1. Every so often, the devices forgets that I get ABC in high definition and proceeds to record shows like Alias in Standard Definition. To correct this I must delete the recording, and create a new one. Of course I'd rather hurl the box from the window before going through the 20 step process to do this.
  2. At least 3 times a week, the box records a show for 0 minutes, 5 minutes, or 49 minutes, but not the full hour. The box has no idea that it did this.
  3. At least once a week, there is no audio that comes out of the box, so I must powercycle it. If it is recording something, I must wait for it to finish before being able to powercycle and hear the audio.
  4. If I use the power on/off feature of the box, 99% of the time, there is no video or audio when I turn it back on. I need to start a pre-recorded show then go back to live tv
  5. The UI is HORRIBLE. Who designed this software? It sucks.
    1. Adding a new recording is like a 20 step process.
    2. Anytime you make a mistake you have to start over
    3. None of the controls for the PVR (to go to the recorded TV list and start a show) work from the on demand application
  6. The box can't deal with some really basic conflicts
  7. I have no way of knowing what shows I actually watched from the recorded TV list
  8. Your box didn't even handle Daylight Savings time correctly. It updated a day late!!!

It's truly appalling what a buggy product this is. If TiVo shipped this product back in 1999, they would have gone out of business in their first year. It's amazing that 6 years later, you have produced a product that is 100% worse than TiVo or Windows Media Center. This box is so unreliable, that I cannot count on it to be anything fancier than a dual HiDef Cable box. I actually have to watch the shows I really care about when they are on TV.

One day, I hope to have support in my Windows Media Center box for CableCard so that I can go back to my trusty and reliable Windows Media Center to record TV. When that day comes, it will be a joyous one. I cannot wait to call you up to come pick up this box.

Do you have the Motorola DCT6412?

I have the Scientific-Atlanta Explorer 8000 (non-hdtv) DVR from Time Warner and it has almost the same exact problems that you have. I also have a ReplayTV from 1999. The ReplayTV unit is a 1000% better than the Scientific-Atlanta DVR.

My guess is that the people that "designed" this DVR software don't really understand the basic concepts of a DVR. Did they even use a ReplayTV or Tivo? Also, the quality of programming is terrible and I would guess that there is no testing at all. It really is an amazing example of bad software.

I've got the comcast box with the iGuide software (don't think it's the TVGuide junk).

I don't have *any* of the problems that you have.

I've only got two:
- After a "thanks electric company" power cycle, I've got this "recording" from 1980 that I can't get rid of
- If I search for a program, it will always find the SD version, so I have to note the time and go set the recording up manually in the guide

I've got Comcast in the North Dallas area with the Motorolla 6412.

I've been pleasantly surprised by this DVR because I had such low expectations for it...

Mike gingerly sets the phone back in the cradle after dialing only half of Comcasts new subscriber phone number...

i couldn't agree more. i went from a dual-tuner DirecTivo to this excuse for a consumer device and have been fighting with it ever since. my current woe is that it simply decides not to record my programs sometimes. no explaination, its just not there.

the UI is an abonination. i can understand if this was a 1.0 in a brand new space, but Tivo and Replay clearly showed the way here. all they had to do was use one and mimic it.

i can only hope they overwrite this tvguide stuff with the msft version (i'm in the sf bay area)

Sorry Omar - shame TV-Guide doesn't measure to WAF. I'll second that hardware + MS-TV software has been pretty solid for me since about late December when a glitch cause it to forget all scheduled recordings with each software update. (Then again my wife nearly divorced after missing a couple of Desperate Housewives episodes)

About the only complaint I have now is the ocassional UI slowdown when HDTV shows start recording. Even Tivo used to have moments like that though.

I have the same box, with our foundation software: it's still crap. I get the audio problem, the glitchy records, etc.

This, my friend, is what you get when you have to design software on top of someone elses box, someone elses firmware. Companies that control the end to end experience gain more here.

I too have ongoing issues with this cheap piece of crap. Although I pay $9.95 a month for the 'pleasure' of renting it from Comcrap, I still am unable to finish a recording. Freezeups, audio issues, it never ends. Comcrap is headed out here again on Saturday to replace. I'll likely go back to Tivo as I have very little hope based on all the feedback on many sites I read about this abomination.
