Dennis says avoid NetGear

Dennis has a bad experience with a Netgear router.

AirportexpressIMHO, avoid pretty much everyone. I’ve used Netgear, D-link, Linksys. None of them work reliably. So what do I use now? Apple. That’s right, cause I know that smart people down the street from my office designed that stuff and it works. But you pay a premium for it. I’m happy to do so when it comes to my home network. My first wireless base station was an Airport, and I’m back to using them exclusively after numerous failed attempts with everyone in between.

Dennis, you should know better. Get an AirPort Express if you want something small that will travel.

Couldn't resist that $55 rebate. :)

Apple's airports have had their shares of problems too in the past:

Actually, I ranted about this on an internal DL and got some very interesting (but confidential) feedback about why they all suck - and why all of them suck the same way, especially in the DHCP aspect. Some guy who has a very fancy title keeps a machine in his house for the sole purpose of giving out IP addresses. Sheesh.

I sure liked Microsoft's BroadBand Networking devices. Worked better and more reliably than anything else I've tried. Why did MS drop that line?

I spec Apple, but my friends often end up with Linksys. If you’re on a budget it makes sense to just power-cycle the crappy router when it goes on the fritz.

I never had much luck with Microsoft’s devices. As I recall they didn’t have an HTML admin interface so you had to install a Windows-only program just to manage them. Of course the same could be said for Apple’s products, but the Apple utility is better than I remember the Microsoft one being (and cross-platform).
