Google Reader needs Mute

Here is a feature that Google Reader needs: Mute.

Why, Cause subscribing to a lot of tech bloggers, a-list folks, and news outlets is extremely annoying when they write about the same thing. You get tired of seeing dozens or hundreds of posts about Kindle, Facebook, ThinkSecret and on and on.

These days I feel like my blogging info is like the local news (which I stopped watching some time back in high school).

So, please google, let me mute or mark read all feed items on a certain topic as read and save me the hassle of suffering through the repetition and pain.

Hopefully in time for MacWorld?

You could always, you know, not read them. :)

I unsubscribed from a bunch of "tech" blogs a couple of years ago. and it's been great for my newsreader.

Or you could set up a Yahoo Pipe for the worst offenders and filter out those posts with certain keywords in them.

I generally use search for this. For example, when the Kindle was released, I waited a day or so, did a search for "kindle", switched the results to list view, read a couple of posts and then m-ed the rest of them ("m" being the mark as read shortcut).

Unfortunately, unlike threads in Gmail, the concept of a topic/conversation is more fuzzy in Reader so something like "mute" isn't quite as straightforward.

Mihai-

But that is why you are an engineer at Google! To figure these things out for me :-).

Thanks for the post. Reader is an awesome product

Or at least the ability to recognize duplicates. Several shared feeds from friends with similar interests means you see the same post repeatedly.

Google Reader could allow people to setup filters, but it's easier just to skim over the articles in List View.
