Hierarchical Keywords with Lightroom and Vista

One of the nice features in the Windows Photo Gallery in Vista is the ability to add hierarchical keywords. I have a few hundred keywords right now. A subset of these keywords are People, Events, Places etc. I would like to collapse the flat list of keywords so I can more easily browse.

Well in the Windows Photo Gallery you can create a keyword like Foo\Bar and it will nest Bar under Foo. Cool.

But....

Yep you guessed it. Adobe's newly launched Lightroom has it's own incompatible hierarchal keyword system. When you export a RAW photo the hierarchy is collapsed and the parent/child relationship is not included.

This whole metadata, xmp, exif stuff is still not interoperable.

Adobe should conform to the Windows Vista standard. Period. Vista will be installed on millions more desktops than Lightroom could even dream of. Using an incompatible system is a conscious choice that serves only to further infuriate consumers that want computers that "just work."

Adobe's system is also inferior to Vista's, as it results in the loss of the hierarchical data. But an inferior system that is interoperable would still be preferred to a superior one that is not.

Insert profanity here.

I looked carefully at light room. It looks likea fantastic app for someone who used to do serious B&W darkroom work (as a hoby). But its ability to organize is just not there, and, sadly, that is the most important thing for me at this point in my life -- so I didn't get it.

One option I considered, but didn't follow up on, was to use Vista for tagging organization (they did a really good job there) and lightroom for modifications of pictures, etc. This would mean almost no modifications in light room for tagging. If I remember correctly, you can use Vista to open a photo editing program -- I suspect you could setup light room to do that.

I've never played with RAW, so that may kill this workflow idea.

The basic problem with the interoperability (sp!) is that the concept of hierarchical tags has never been specified. Both Adobe and MS are making ad-hoc standards here. It would be good for both of them to get together and fix it.

I've got close to 1000 tags now. I was a bit suprised to find after my Vista upgrade that some of the tags with a "/" in them have become hirearchical... :-) But it is a small issue as very few of my tags had this problem.
