I love this dialog

Windows apparently didn't get my memo. I don't have a modem any more. This is the dialog you get the first time you add or edit a phone number in Outlook. BTW this happened with Outlook 2007 with Vista.

Couldn't that be for Outlook's ability to dial a contact for you automatically, rather than modem connection?

I'm gonna somehow figure out a way to switch all your phones to pulse dialing, Omar.

Massachusetts used to allow a small (maybe 50 cents) monthly fee for "touch-tone dialing." So I called up the local telephone company and ask them to cancel the touch-tone service; switched my cordless phone to pulse dialing(!) and everything was fine, except for automated telephone systems.

Then I realized that of course they didn't shut off the touch-tone dialing, so I switched the phone back. A few months later the telephone companies prevailed on Massachusetts to allow them to roll the "touch-tone dialing" fee into the standard charge, ending the whole rigamarole.

What surprised me wasn't the bizarre fee--remember the telephone excise tax?--but that my then-new phone actually had a pulse-dialing mode.
