Know of a good FTP Program?

Anyone that has ever used the FTP program built into Windows XP knows that it leaves a lot to be desired. My favorite feature is when it hangs, then hangs explorer screwing a whole lot of things up. Or even better is when it craps out in the middle of an FTP upload and you have no idea where to resume from.

Anyway, I've been using SmartFTP for a while, but I can't stand its incessant nagging that my copy is unlicensed or expired. According to their web page, I don't have to pay because I'm using it for personal use. However, on boot it still nags me. So today I figure I'll go plock down the $35 bucks it costs to register, so off I go to the website hoping they will take PayPal. Looks like they do, but they still want me to fill in a huge form of data just to give them money. I can't be bothered. I was hoping for a button I could just click to pay and get my license code.

SmartFTP

Anyway, anyone know of any good, free or shareware FTP programs that make it easy to give the author money?

Try filezilla, is open source. A little buggy if you do inline editing (very annoying) but for normal purposes is unbeatable.

I agree with Paperino on this one - FileZilla is one of the best ftp clients out there currently

Use Total Commander from http://www.ghisler.com
It's a Norton Commander with a great FTP-client supporting resume and synchronisation.

Onyl shareware-limitiation: You have to press 1,2 or 3 at beginning.

I don't use Explorer anymore!

Check out WinSCP. http://winscp.net

With most traditional FTP clients, you have to first download the files you want to edit, make changes to them, and upload them back up manually. WinSCP looks and behaves sort of like Explorer, so once you're connected, you just have to double-click the file you want to edit and save the changes when you're done. All the downloading and uploading happens automatically in the background. It's very convenient.

Wait, you can't be bothered to fill out the order form but you can be bothered write up a whole post with screenshot on it? As far as I can tell, it's a very standard form where they take your billing information only... it's a great app and well worth the $35.

I used FileZilla as well. It's got a funky UI, but it works and is quick. I don't know about anyone else, but paying money for a ftp client is against my religion.

Filezilla as well. In over three years of using FileZilla I have not had any complaints and they continue to release updates on a regular basis, so any bugs you may find, will eventually be fixed.

Filezilla is good.

I also like using the command line app ncftp.

ncftp is also a great command line app for the Mac.

The other nice thing about FireZilla is there is a portable version of it. No installation and you can carry it on a thumbdrive. (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/ftp/portable_filezilla)

I've always used FlashFXP:

http://www.inicom.net/pages/en.ffxp-home.php

It's $25 dolalrs but it's worth it as you get all the Upgrades Free, I'm not sure how long it takes to buy it though, it used to be very fast but the sites updated since I last checked (a couple of years ago) so I'm not sure.

FILEZILLA! I came across it accidently, and it's one of the most straight forward FTP programs since WS_FTP 95, which I had been using until recently when it was refusing to run on my computer.

Who needs multiple screens, multiple FTP sites open at once, etc? All the FTP programs on the market seem to miss the most important part of FTPing - simple file transfer from a computer to a FTP site.

I use FTP Surfer: http://www.whispertech.com/surfer/ . It's free and it works.

Another vote for FileZilla.

I like FlashFXP.

I've been using Core FTP (free version) for a few years now and it's been rock solid for me. Even inline editing of files for quick 1-line changes is well done.

I vote for the PortableApps.com version of FileZilla. For extra cool-points, I have set this up in a FolderShare'd directory, so the FTP client AND all of my FTP locations are available to me on all of my machines.

FileZilla is way quicker than most other clients I have used too...

IMHO, you should check out the other products at PortableApps.com for "FolderShare-ability" too.

I've used FileZilla for some time now - quick, easy and reliable. But I am going to check out some of the others commented on here, just out of curiosity. I have used a couple but not all.

I used FileZilla until I downloaded FireFTP, which can be opened in a tab in Firefox. It's about as simple as FZ (or simpler), looks nice, very fast and is well designed.

My recommendation would be FTP Voyager. It has been very reliable for me, I started using it in September 2003.

SelfishGene,

They take PayPal. There is no need for any form at all. Just a "Pay Now" button.
