Mountain Biking

Once upon a time, I was an avid Mountain Biker. I used to ride close to 100 miles a week on and off road. I was in great shape. Back then front suspension bikes just arrived on the scene and I got an aftermarket Manitou Shock with my cool Sran Grip Shifters. A lot of time has passed and I've owned 3 different mountain bikes. 2 years ago my Trek Fuel was stolen and I never got around to replacing it.

Well the time has come. I now live pretty close to the hills and there is no excuse. Today I went and test rode some Full Suspension bikes, a Cannondale and a Rocky Mountain Element 50. I really liked the Rocky Mountain but have never heard of them. I've been a Gary Fisher/Trek guy for the past two bikes. Does anyone have any experience with Rocky Mountain bikes and have good or bad things to say?

You can't go wrong with a Rocky Mountain or a Cannondale, but with my money I'd go with the RM 50 - a great bike. If you are a Gary Fisher/Trek guy then what about a Sugar or a Cake? I love my Sugar and I've tested the Cake and it was awesome as well. RM is Canadian and excellent quality.

Ah yes, mountain biking. I used to ride all the time, too, but it's been years. Your post might just inspire me to get back on the bike...

As for Rocky Mountain, they are excellent bikes. Canadian designed and built, very high quality. They've been around for years and were started by a few mountain biking pioneers in Vancouver. When I bought my last bike, the choice was between a Kona and RM. I decided on the Kona because I thought it fit my leggy frame a bit better, but the RM rode far better than the Kona.

Great bikes. Go for it!

I test drove a Fisher Cake and loved it. For a tall person it was the most comfortable bike (but the RM is a close second). The RM is close to 2 grand though, and I can get the '07 Fisher Caliber for around $1700. Will have to wait till the bike store gets the Caliber in an XL so I can try that out.

As a Canadian, I am constitutionally required to recommend the Rocky Mountain. Even if I wasn't legally bound to do so, I would still recommend it. RM makes great bikes. Much like an above commenter, I always seem to choose between an RM and a Kona (although I've also ridden a Marin or two in my day). I personally can't stand the geometry on Cannondales. Not sure why, but like the horse on Ren and Stimpy says, "No sir, I didn't like it."
