Photshop Maximize Compatability

I just noticed this warning when I saved a file:

So lets see. You are asking the user a question. Unchecking the checkbox above has no clear benefit to me. However, if I do uncheck it my file may not be compatible with future versions of Photoshop or other applications.

Not I undestand it may not be compatible with other applications, but not with future versions of Photoshop?

So lets see. Here is what I know:

  • Unchecking Maximize compatibility has no clear benefits
  • Unchecking Maximize compatability may render this file unusable in other applications
  • Unchecking Maximize compatability may render this file unusable in the next version of Photoshop

HELLO! Adobe? What is the point of asking me this when I save a PSD file? If I were the PM for this feature, I would have cut the thing entirely.

I've noticed that, doesnt make a lot of sense, I just click through it.

I have Photoshop CS, but now that a new version is out, I'll have to experiment with this when I get CS2 :)

Which version of Photoshop are you using?

Actually, you probably *do* want to uncheck it. Starting with Photoshop 7 (I think that's when, maybe it was earlier), Adobe changed the PSD file format: older versions of the program couldn't open the newer files. So the maximize compatibility stores an extra composite copy inside the file so that the older versions can still open it.

If you're not planning to share the file with users of Photoshop versions 6 and earlier (and Photoshop CS is effectively v8, and Photoshop CS2 is v9), uncheck it so that your PSD files are smaller.

On the implementation, well, I don't disagree with you there.

The dialog implies that compat with PS9 is not garunteed. I am using PS CS1.
