Quicken 2007 Trial on Jan 1st

Starting Jan 1st I'll be using Quicken 2007 and my existing Money 2007 side by side for as many days as it takes me to make a decision about which one is better.

I wrote about how I might switch back in August, but when I started to do so it was too daunting to do in the middle of the year. Since the export/import story is impossible I decided to wait till Jan 1st and start with a clean file and only bring over my necessary information to keep my financial life chugging a long.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I've been using Quicken for Windows since version 1.0, and must say that Quicken 2007 is the most bloated, buggiest version ever. I need to blog the numerous reasons why, but as a software guy, you'll enjoy the flickering issue most of all. I get the feeling that Quicken is a big, lumbering codebase that is being maintained by a 3rd or 4th generation of engineers who now resort to hacks.

Back in July, not only did I dump Money and jump to Quicken, I moved to Quicken on the Mac.

No problems so far, don't miss Money at all.

I've decided to dump Money too. I'm actually switching to lightweight tracking in Excel and tracking all the details on the websites for my financial institutions. I found that I was mostly spending my time duplicating info from other web sites into Money with no real value. I'm not using the budgeting or otherwise using the data in Money in any worthwhile way. I feel like tons of time has been freed up of not having to enter stuff into Money.

I just switched to Quicken from 11 years of using Money. Money 1995 rocked, all other versions sucked ass. Here's the real newsflash - Quicken Sucks even more, if such a thing were possible. I'm just sick about it. I did the same thing you did, started new for the year and everything.

I also moved to Quicken for the Mac. It doesn't seem quite as bloated as it's Windows brethern. I gave up on Money after it ate my records one too many times. Reverting to a backup every few weeks was a bit more trouble than it was worth.

Notes: I don't use electronic downloads as they tend to cause more problems than they solve. I generally only use the "account register" and reporting tools of these (Money/Quicken) type products. If I end up not happy with Quicken for the Mac then I'll be taking the advice of a previous poster and moving my accounts into an Excel spreadsheet.
