Send to OneNote from Outlook PowerToy

At long last, my PowerToy is live! Send to OneNote from Outlook lets you send Mail, Post items and Sticky Notes to OneNote (note, this was previously called Outlook2OneNote).

While you are there I also recommend Send to OneNote from Internet Explorer.

Both of these use the OneNoteImporter that Donovan created.

A lot of folks at Microsoft were instrumental in dogfooding the product as well as answering my never ending questions about managed programmability in Office 2003. Special thanks to Siew Moi Khor and Misha Shneerson for showing me the light.

Note, if you install this PowerToy and you do not see the toolbar icons in your Outlook standard toolbar this is because the Outlook 2003 .NET Programmability Support is not enabled. To fix this you must:

  1. Uninstall the PowerToy if you have already installed it
  2. From the Start menu, select Control Panel, and click Add/Remove programs.
  3. Select Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003, and then select Change.
  4. Select Add or Remove Features and click Next.
  5. Click Chose advanced customization of applications.
  6. Expand Microsoft Office Outlook, and confirm .NET Programmability Support is set to Run from My Computer.

Omar - I posted about your PowerToy this morning but your trackback doesn't seem to be working. It looks awesome. If you need a beta tester, drop me a note.

Omar - I have been using the GTD methodology for some time, I use Outlook as my primary tool (with the GTD add-in) and have just started to use One Note SP1 for reference material - so I am really looking forward to your add-in!
Hope it can be used together with Outlook 2000 and not only 2003 (company policy...)

Omar writes great stuff, and this looks like no exception.

That said, I used to use OneNote, but have since switched 100% to a wiki lifestyle. So I'll also post a plug here for FlexWikiPad, another tool that I'm writing for doing information management. It integrates with the FlexWiki (http://www.flexwiki.com) wiki software. You can download it at http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/fwcontrib - it's in a pretty stable beta state right now. Not without bugs, but I use it successfully every day, and am actively developing it.

Jon,

yes I am using the GTD add-in for Outlook. I like it quite a bit but they seem to be slow to make changes, improvements and bugfixes. Who knows, maybe one day I'll write my own GTD add-in :-).

One of my motivations for writing this add-in was because of my use of the GTD Outlook software which I pretty much rely on at this point.

Ole-

Sadly, supporting Outlook 2000 isn't something I can do. It should work with XP, but writing COM Add-ins for 2000 is quite messy and not something I'll have the time to get to.

The add-in sounds great. Looking forward to making it part of my GTD routine!

This does sound great. When will it be available?

Also, Since OneNote is great for reference material, note taking, agendas, etc., it is natural to collection action items in it (and use the Note Flag features).

Is anyone working on a way to convert Note Flags to Outlook Tasks.
The main reason for this is I sync Outlook Tasks to my Treo and it would be great to have all my Action Items on one device in one system.

I started using OneNote and Outlook with David Allen's "Getting Things Done" methodology and I love it. I feel so much more productive.

I wish I could use the GTD add-in, but I am using Outlook Connector for Domino (yes my company uses Notes, exept for a few rebels like me) and it doesn't work.

I also started using a Wacom Graphire3 tablet and it is awesome. I can write directly to the screen with digital ink, mark up documents, etc., almost like having a TabletPC. To make it easier to use, I printed a screen shot of OneNote and use it as underlay so I have a representation of where my pen/screen relationship is.
