So long MacBU, Hello Hotmail

Well, today was my last day in the Macintosh Business Unit. I've worked here ever since I joined over 5 years ago. I feel privileged to have worked with some of the folks who are still here or moved on before me. I had a truly amazing time working on OE, Entourage, IE, MSN, and Virtual PC. It's funny to think back of the days when I first joined. My first visit to Redmond, my first Release To Web, working on a top secret project (Entourage), and most recently learning an entirely new product. I'll always look back on these last 5 years as some of the best times in my life, and I'll very much miss the people.

The good news is that I'm not going far. Monday morning I'll be working one building over on the Hotmail Frontdoor team. I'll be a Lead Program Manager on the Frontdoor infrastructure. My team is responsible for things like DAV, Passport, POP, SMTP and various other Frontdoor protocols as well as a number of other things (many of which I don't know anything about). I'm happy that I'll be doing mail stuff again, but working on a service rather than a fat client. Plus I'll be working with Reeves Little again (Reeves used to be the Test Lead on OE, now a PM in Hotmail).

I decided to pursue this position for a number of reasons, and much of it has to do with where I want my career to go in my next 5 years at MS. I also find that I want new and different challenges. I've been working on Mac related software for a long time and am looking forward to something that's on a totally different scale ;-). Hotmail is something that I feel is a great match because of my backround in mail stuff and my interest in the stuff they are doing. I think the free mail space is getting even more competitive, and I love competition!

So, my office is all packed up (it all fix in 8 boxes!). Not that much stuff. I'm off to my 10 year high school reunion this weekend, and come Monday I'll be sitting in my new office.

Lots of good times. Like that rainy friday afternoon, July 19th 2002 when we recalled Palm RTW from your parents apartment in NYC :)

You too, Omar? Dan, Han-Yi, now you, all in the space of a few months. Too bad you couldn't stay until VPC 7 was out the door. Ah well. Well, every time I've met you in person over the past two years, I noticed you had a Windows laptop of one type or another with you. ;-) I can imagine that advancement is limited when you stay in MacBU - there must be a lot more options in the big Windows world. So, best of luck. Maybe also nice to be in your company's main focus of interest rather than "out on a limb". All the best.

Omar - best of luck in your new adventure! A high school reunion seems like a perfect weekend to put you in an introspective "past meet future" frame of mind before starting something new.

Congratulations on your new endeavor, Omar! I have no doubt that Hotmail Frontdoor team will be a better team with you. I love the stuff you publish here, and the work you do within the community. It will be good to see those same qualities carried forward into Hotmail.

Best of luck!

Good luck, Omar! The Mac world will miss you, and Hotmail needs you. You're a great guy and a real smarty too. Have fun!

Many people struggle their whole lives to fulfill their dreams. By the age of 22 you were living it. It's time for a new set of goals and I'm sure you'll be knocking those off in no time as well.

We had a lot of fun, learned some important lessons, and got to build cool products that we were proud of. We both gave our all to MacBU and you should have no guilt about moving on and doing what's best for you. Now go give Yahoo and Google hell, and find new ways for Hotmail to change the way people communicate.

It's been real.

- Thanks for having macemail.com on the 'net, cause otherwise I'd be still trying to figure out how to put purple folders in Claris Emailer 2.0.
- Thanks for Entourage, otherwise I'd be using Palm Desktop and screaming at it.
- Thanks for Outlook Express, because otherwise, I wouldn't be loving beta testing so much (and that cool OE5 T-shirt! Righteous!)
- Thanks for being so friendly when I met you at Macworld Expo NY a few years ago, or I would be a Anti-MS Mac snob the world hates.
- Thanks for being real, your blog proves it.

Go get 'em!

I noticed you have your blog in two different places... here and http://blogs.msdn.com/omars/archive/2004/05/14/131635.aspx

Odd that the main content is the same in both places but that each have their own comments....
