Some Custom Domains Info

A lot of people seem really excited about the new Windows Live Custom Domains. I've seen some great individual posts on blogs about the service. Some folks left me some comments asking questions about the service. Well it turns out that the team has a blog that answers most of these questions.

There is one unfortunate thing about the service and that is the accounts are on classic hotmail (not Kahuna). We'll hopefully address that soon.

Oh, and I'd like to note. Some people have noticed, but this is hopefully one of many SBG (Shipped Before Google) features :-P.

Hi, Omar: Google supports free POP3 access to Gmail accounts, so if/when Google ships a similar product, it will kick Live's ass. If you really want this to count as "SBG," you need to offer free POP3/IMAP access, and 2 GB per account. As it stands, domains.live.com is useless to me; I switched my MX record to Live, then switched back an hour later.

Omar, I was wondering if you could comment on "MSN Premium" users? With WLM poised to offer 2GB, where does that leave Premium? Are we to become "Windows Live Premium"?

Yes, I'd like to hear more about MSN Premium as well.

I switched my domain onto live.com and added my new mail accounts to MSN Premium as it makes such a good family email client.

But transferring mail content from old MSN Premium accounts to new live accounts was painful (had to go via Outlook Express) and MSN Premium support was deeply unhelpful when I suggested that I wanted to make a live account eh master billing account for my MSN Premium.

Their best advice was cancel your subscription and resubscribe, but don't use a domain.live account as you won't be able to use that as a billing account :-(
