Thinkpad Beeping

It's funny how every laptop maker has strange quirks.

Playing with my new T60 I noticed that it randomly beeps when I am typing emails.

So of course I did a search for "thinkpad beeping" and found this post.

It seems if you press any 3 combinations of these letters:

4567rtyufghjvbnm

the Thinkpad will make that classic old heartless annoying PC BEEP.

Weird. Why on earth would it do this?

That means you already have your T60! I was waiting to buy one until you posted your experiences with Vista on it ;)

I'm anxiously waiting.

Thanks

My Z60m does the same thing. I've always wondered why it randomly beeped, I can sleep soundly at night once again. :)

Oh no, you mean that Lenevo hasn't fixed that blasted beeping? I have the same problem on my X40, but did not have the problem on my old X24.

This sucks for sloppy typists like myself. I've kept the audio muted at all times. Thanks for the link to the fix!

I think it has to do with the matrixing of the keyboard encoder. Not all keyboards allow all keys to be pressed at once (for reasons of cost savings on the keyboard chipset). This is mostly an issue for gaming (who presses three keys at once?), but could occur with regular usage if the matrixing is really horrible.

That's my theory, anyway. The beep service is only doing what it's told, so this is a classic case of fixing the symptom and not the problem. ;)

If you look at where those keys are located...

the beep indicates you have dropped your head on the keyboard :-)

Interesting. I have the exact same experience with my current Toshiba M200 and its driven me crazy for years now. I made some efforts to figure out how to disable it, but never did figure out *why* it does that.
