Toshiba Gigabeat S

GigabeatThe Toshiba Gigabeat S will be my next portable media player. I beta tested Portable Media Center v2 and absolutely loved it (just like I loved v1). But the v1 hardware was huge, now with v2 they support much smaller hardware and the QVGA display I had on my test device was amazing.

This is going to be a killer device. PMC UX is far far better than the iPod. CNet may have given the Creative Zen Vision:M best of show for CES, but I don’t buy for a second that Creative has learned how to create a UX that’s any better than the Micro (which was just tolerable), or stopped pushing it’s bad media player software on you.

I've been an iPod owner for several models over the years and never have had a reason to look toward the other players, but I'm at a point where I'm willing to look around the next time I upgrade. What is "PMC UX" and what makes it better than an iPod?

Because, if there’s one thing consumers care about, it’s “PMC UX!”

(It is Microsoft-speak for “Portable Media Center User Experience.” You know how Microsoft always talks about “user experience,” which, as far as I can tell, is shorthand for, “we’re more interested in engineering than design.”)

Totally agree with you on your pic for your next portable media player... this one looks great. Any idea of the physical dimensions of this? Will it rival the iPod video 30GB in size?

I have to agree. PMC is a great software. I've blogged about the Gigabeat familly for a year now, www.mygigabeat.com and when Toshiba announced its partnership with Microsoft back in May I suspected that Tochiba would give up its not so good attempt at software development.

The current F series comes with a software called Gigabeat Room that leaves a lot to wish for. I have allways liked WMP, and the fact that it is already running on my PC is a plus.

The interation with WMP and PMC will benefit all newbies, and veterans like myself that rather not install another piece of crappy software on my PC.

I was fortunate to go to CES this year and get hands on experience with the new S Series and my over all impression was that Toshiba and Microsoft finally got it. Yes we want a player that looks great, better than any iPod in my eyes. Yes we want video, FM tuner, photos, easy to use interface, good audio, etc.

As a proud owner of an XBOX 360 the fact that a PMC device will be able to playback and navigated thourgh the console is an extra plus!

Chekc out my blog and the forum over at www.mygigabeat.com for more info.
