UPS is incompetent?

Last week I was expecting 2 packages. One was sent via 3 day ground saver and the other was sent overnight saver.

The first package made it to Sunnyvale, CA (minutes from my house) and was then routed to Oregon (on a truck). It wasn't until the next day that their stupid tracking system updated the status from "on time delivery" to rescheduled. When I called the guy on the phone was like, "at worst you'll get it to tomorrow". I was like "do you have a map, did you see where my package is heading to?"

The second package, the overnight one, arrived in Menlo Park (my home) and sat on a truck all day long till the driver came back to UPS with the package undelivered. When I would call to ask about status they said "drivers are expected to attempt to deliver all packages before returning" and that I could receive my package up to 8pm.

No such luck. I got the package the next day...

Moral of the story? UPS, who has never failed me in all my years has two strikes against them.... what the hell is going on over there?

Looks like I'm not the only one with UPS problems.

My favorite was the time I bought something from Pennsylvania - and somewhere in Ohio (I think) someone misread the label and sent it back to the From address. :(

What carrier would be a good alternative? FedEx seems to be more pricey in most cases. How's DHL? What really sucks is that when you order things online, you rarely have much of a choice about which carrier delivers your items anyway.

I've ordered something through newegg 2 days ago using FedEx and it seems like is going to take five days, using Express Saver, to get to Seattle from TN. So FedEx is pricey and not much better.
I am getting convinced that the ol' USPS is getting better and better when compared with UPS/FedEx/DHL. They deliver on Saturday at no extra charge, they can even deliver on Sunday/festivities with Express mail and usually coast to coast it doesn't take more than 3 days with priority mail. It is unfortunate that some stores don't use USPS.

UPS suck in some very major ways. I've had them destroy items in shipping (like, break a stereo speaker in half) and then deny any responsibility. If you ever have to deal with them directly (e.g. pickup from their depot) they're far less helpful and efficient compared to FedEx. I'll quite happily pay extra to use FedEx, who somehow always manage to be careful with my packages, helpful when I need help and efficient about getting my packages to me on time. UPS are more like a Third World government agency by comparison - always looking for a way to screw you.

FedEx is the way to go.
