Vista excitement?

Hmm, had this email exchange today with my sister. I found it pretty amusing.

Sister: can you send me some ideas for laptop ... So many options out there.

Omar: Sony VGN-SZ390

Sister: cool, thanks.

Omar: there are a bunch of models and Sony’s site sux so you should probably customize it. However, if you can wait you’d be better off as Vista is about to come out.

Sister: customizing sounds like a pain.  we can wait.  let me know when it comes out.  thanks!

Omar: You know what vista is right? You should install IM at work.

Sister: no, but i bet it's worth waiting for.  right? i have aol IM at work.  didn't put my msn at work.

Omar: Can I post this email to my blog? It’s pretty funny.

Sister: what's funny?  seriously.

Yeah, she is going to wait for Vista, and yes, she knows I work for Microsoft.

But this brings me to a point. Outside of the tech and business world who knows or even cares about Vista and the fact that it was delayed? My sister will buy a new computer one day and it will come with Vista. She'll probably call me and be like "hey, it looks different" and not even think twice about going about her day. She will appreciate the performance and reliability as well as the new applications and improved usability of the OS (not to mention the improved security). The OEMs will continue to dilute the improvements in usability by injecting their little craplets to do things like muck up the built in DVD burning, Malware projection, Firewall and bunch of other things and the world won't really be all that different... or will it? I think it will, because the PC industry will be fueled by a new operating system with half a decade of engineering improvements, hopefully raising the bar in albeit subtle ways... and last but not least maybe it will move the stock price up rather than sideways.

Or she'll be like "holy cow, I don't know how to do anything anymore", and get completely frustrated. That's what I expect from my parents, anyway. I suspect it's going to be a big problem for some people.

This just confirms what an echo chamber we can live in. Here you have tech pundits yelling about the sky is falling because Vista is delayed, and there you have the general public who could care less.

I had a similar conversation with my father-in-law, who, a couple of months ago, was asking all about the project I was working on (Zune), then asked, "And did I hear something about how Microsoft is also working on a new operating system or something?"

I appreciate that you and your readers feel like I am a good representation of the general public and not some degenerate. Gives me that warm / fuzzy feeling.

Of course people outside the tech word don't care or know about Vista and it's apparent delay... just like when I was at the NYSE and no one else cared if our commercials that we busted our butts to produce were late to market or didn't run at the right commercial breaks.

When you're an expert in something, it's natural to be more "in the know" than the rest of the world, and as a result more passionate about it.

At least I think your advise is reliable, and you're known as an expert when it comes to technology. I am currently going through my quarter life crisis because I have no idea what the heck I'm an expert in. What do I want to be when I grow up???

Btw-- I still have no clue what Vista is. But I'm okay with that.

-Navine is waiting on -the thing called- Vista to come to purchase her PC, doesn't that maker her a person that cares?
I have other friends that are in the same shoes, waiting for Vista to come out to replace a crappy/old laptop...they really care!
-IT departments care, specially if they've budgeted money and time to test the new OS, and more so if they've delayed new work/projects till Vista comes out...oh I forgot that also makes it a problem for business departments in teh company...(Come on Omar, you work for the that enables the people_ready business).
-Microsoft partners care, cause they're sick of waiting on the OS to get finalized
-Microsoft cares, cause customer retention is effected by how long they wait, no? remember IE7 and Firefox?

Actually, maybe you should mention the "improved security". That new dialog is pretty annoying, as this reviewer noted:

Deep down, Omar, you know you should really be advising Nevine to get a Mac. Tiger's just fine, no need to wait for Leopard. ;-)

I've got an SZ390P, and Vista Enterprise. Sadly Sony don't seem to know about Vista drivers just yet!

It's a nice machine, Vista is a nice OS. I just hope Sony prove that their support for 4 week old hardware is better when Vista gets to the home releases, or I'll be wishing I got a Tosh
